Street Smarts: How Well Do You Know Your Streets?
East Cesar Chavez Street
Artsy & Homey
This area is another hub of nightlife and culture, though slightly less rowdy than other city hotspots. With delicious food, including a ton of creative plant-based options that pay homage to the city’s mighty taco obsession and bars that lack pretension and retain the charm of a good dive, this is an energetic street that maintains a familial, welcoming feeling. With a plethora of family-owned businesses lining the street, this area remains a special part of the city.
Be sure to visit Juan in a Million and Mr. Natural for a laidback lunch at a family-owned joint or one of the many food trucks in the area for an al fresco experience. Texsueño and Vegan Nom are two spots that should not be missed.
Long Play Lounge East is a great hideaway for eclectic local music happenings. Wander in on any given night to be delighted by everything from indie duos to Beatles cover bands to jazz jams. During the day, pop into Women & Their Work to peruse their displays dedicated to uplifting and amplifying women artists, or stop by Duck Camp for a truly unique shopping experience. With several other galleries and live music spots, this area shines.
Insider Knowledge:
In 1993, the street formerly known as First Street was renamed to honor the life and legacy of César Chávez, a hugely impactful union organizer and Hispanic rights activist.
