A Brush with Death Valley
If you’re bored of beaches but still looking for a fun escape to nature, consider exploring the rich offerings of Death Valley National Park. Compared to more “exotic” destinations, Death Valley offers balmy weather, big skies, endless choices for recreation, and fantastic resorts that are both closer to home and more affordably priced.
Hikers would do well to check out the stunning and picturesque Mosaic Canyon. About three miles long, the narrow and shaded entry path gives way to a sunny, sprawling wash. Other canyons and dunes are accessible to hikers of all skill levels and are scattered throughout the broad park, accessible via car.
With springtime temperatures often nearing 95 degrees, relaxing poolside between morning or evening excursions is a great idea. Look no further than The Oasis at Death Valley, a sprawling ranch that spares no amenities, an oasis amidst the expansive desert landscape.
Naturalists in need of something more rugged can also choose from a variety of campgrounds that cater to both tents and recreational vehicles. The Texas Springs Campground, located in the hills above The Oasis, affords tremendous views.
Finally, if hiking or lounging aren’t your style, trek to Scotty’s Castle – a historical site that’s 3,000 feet above sea level and accessible by car. “Death Valley Scotty,” the mansion’s namesake, earned fame as a prospector in the 1920s; his estate is now open to the public for tours.
Word to the wise – pack plenty of water!
