5 Unique Islands to Add to Your Vacay Bucket List
Europe’s Hawaii
Up until recently, Madeira, Portugal, has flown under the radar of many. However, in 2022, a few airlines began offering direct flights from JFK. So, now that we’re free to move about the globe, it’s time to be one of the first to support the tourism industry on this European island paradise.
Made of volcanic terrain, this lush and rugged island is spotted with dramatic scenery from towering cliffs to tropical forests to rocky shores. Yet it’s also known for its wine regions and is beaming with culture and world-class, affordably-priced hotels. What more could you ask for in an island?
Hikers will be blown away by the sheer amount of walking routes the main isle provides. Known as lavadas (or ancient canals initially constructed to provide irrigation), these footpaths offer a mixture of coastline views from massive cliffs (Câmera de Lobos claims the tallest in Europe!), to fertile jungle floors, to hiking amidst the clouds at Pico do Arieiro and Pico Ruivo mountains. Swim in the old lava pools at Porto Moniz or just gaze at the waves as they spray the basalt rocks rising from the Atlantic. Take a kayak excursion where thrillists can grapple down waterfalls and see parts of the island that are otherwise inaccessible. History and culture abound in the capital city of Funchal. Yet the highlight here is taking a cable car ride to Monte for the views and also for a visit to the botanical gardens and African art at Monte Palace. On the return, take a wicker toboggan down the steep streets—an ancient form of transportation for the locals.
Last but not least, if Spain’s Canary Islands have topped your bucket list, Madeira is a short ferry ride to the lush Canary lands. You might even get a glimpse of whales on your detour!
