5 Unique Islands to Add to Your Vacay Bucket List
The Big Island of St. Croix
The largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, this Caribbean jewel offers plenty of territory to explore and a variety of experiences to satisfy all island cravings. From snorkeling amongst stunning corals to invigorating rainforest explorations to plenty of rum to sample, St. Croix, aka the ‘Big Island,’ is more than white sand beaches—though it has those, too. Two main cities flank either side of the island. Christiansted, the largest, is settled in the north, and Frederiksted faces the southern shore.
Start the trip in Christiansted, which offers easy access to the Buck Island Reef National Monument. This gorgeous underwater treasure, a protected area of land with a plethora of endangered species, including Leatherback turtles mulling about in the spring. The tail end of the trip is best spent on the southern half of the island, and the highlight of which, for many tourists, is the Cruzan Rum Distillery. Be sure to take a tour and see how the magic happens before retiring to the beach to catch some rays. (Read more about a trip to USVI here.)
