Women have been making an impact on East Austin for years. For International Women’s Day, here’s a look at just six of the many local women impacting the community around them.

Dr. Colette Burnette has persevered through the social current to rise into the position she holds today. As the president for Huston-Tillotson University, she is able to portion off time in her job to help young women see that they are just as good as the people around them as they strive to make this a better way for future genrations. {Read more}

Wilhelmina Delco
As the first black legislator from District 50, Wilhelmina Delco has been able to lean into education to make sure the community she has lived in for over 60 years does not disappear. According to Delco, Austin is not the same as it once was. It’s not good or bad, just different. Delco’s passion for education and her involvement within district and higher education comes from her childhood and the events that shaped have her through the years. {Read more}
Patrice Rios
TROO Designs
Austin designer Patrice Rios helps make a difference in the housing world since starting Sige and Honey and by being a co-owner for Troo Designs. Sige and Honey takes shipping containers and makes them into living spaces. With this style of homebuilding, Rios is helping her clients work toward affordable-living options, backyard studios, mother-in-law suites, and homes offices. {Read more}

Andi Scull Cheatham
Hope Farmers’ Market & Hope Outdoor Gallery
After taking risks and embracing her creative calling, Andi Scull Cheatham saw her dreams become reality in 2006 when she launched the HOPE (Helping Other People Everywhere) Campaign with the help of Shepard Fairey, a contemporary street artist of OBEY Clothing. Hundreds of Austin artists have used HOPE’s platforms to start their careers as full-time artists. {Read more}

Dress for Success
With a name that can be a bit misleading, Dress for Success does more than help women be outfitted by a personal style consultant. They run a career center where volunteers work one-on-one with women and go over their resumes, cover letters, and help search for available jobs. The help doesn’t stop once the interview is over; Dress for Success also offers career coaches to women who strive to advance in their fields. {Read more}

Lauren Deaton
