How to Celebrate Hanukkah in Austin: 2022 Edition
6 Fun Ways to Celebrate the Festival of Lights this Year
Words by Abby L. Johnson
Hanukkah is just around the corner (December 18-26), and we are ready to celebrate! Whether your family celebrates annually, or you are looking to learn more about the Hanukkah traditions, it is easy to participate in the festivities right here in Austin.
L’chaim! Celebrate With a Drink
Looking for something a little different this year? Kitty Cohen’s, Webberville Road’s poolside patio bar with a sleek 70s Palm Springs aesthetic, has put together a menu of specialty Hanukkah-themed cocktails that are sure to liven up the Festival of Lights’ festivities. For a little bit of whimsy, grab a drink from the ‘Get Lit’ menu from now until December 30. Plus, it’s gelt-free—part of the proceeds for several drinks, including the ‘Oy Fashioned,’ will be donated to the Shalom Austin JCC.

Lots of Latkes
JewBoy Sliders, the newly opened food truck located at Violet Crown Social Club serves up mini latkes that are simply to die for. And while it might be a bit of a schlep, the original Jewboy Burgers on Airport Boulevard is worth the trip across I-35. While there, be sure to try their Burger of the Month, the ‘Meathead,’ featuring braised short ribs. For lighter fare, try the weekend brunch at Launderette on Holly Street. Their brunch menu offers latkes served with either crème fraiche or apple sauce.

Treat Yourself
Hanukkah tradition calls for a plethora of fried foods and that includes desserts. For something sweet, Lola’s Donuts on Manor Road is offering sufganiyot, traditional Israeli jelly-filled donuts. Flavors are assorted and include fruits fillings, nut butters, and creams. Order ahead of time online in packs of 6 or 12 for weekend pickup (special Monday hours on 12/19 for Hanukkah pick up only also available). Master Donuts also offers jelly-filled donuts in strawberry, lemon, raspberry, and Bavarian cream.

Keeping it Kosher
For everything from Kosher ingredients to dreidels and gelt to Menorahs and candles, The Shuk is a go-to spot for Hanukkah holiday needs. This quaint Kosher grocery store is family-owned and -operated. While this North Austin shop might be a bit of a drive, delivery and curbside service are both available, making holiday shopping a breeze.

Bring the Brisket
Most traditional Jewish brisket is slow-cooked in the oven. Here in Austin, however, barbecue reigns supreme. Indulge both customs and bring a brisket from Micklethwait Craft Meats to the family gathering. This smoked entrée will pair well with savory latkes.
