A Texas Mint Julep
Still Austin Whiskey Gives Bourbon New Life!
Words by Abby L. Johnson
Horses aren’t required to enjoy this Texas take on a Kentucky classic. This iced cocktail is simple and refreshingly light.
After a rather harsh winter, springtime is creeping up on Texas. Bluebonnets and Indian paintbrushes are budding up along the hillsides. The days are longer, and the sun is getting hotter. As Austinites enter this warmer time of year and begin the constant battle to keep cool, a refreshing cocktail does just the trick. The mint julep is a southern staple, synonymous with humid nights spent out on a porch. While Kentucky may lay claim to popularizing the drink, consider this Texas take on an old classic.
Still Austin Whiskey distills bourbon that’s made in, and especially for, Texas. “The Musician,” Still’s signature straight bourbon whiskey is an oaky spiritmade from Texas-grown grains and offers up a subtle complexity. It goes down easy and is palatable to even those who prefer something sweeter, offering up notes of caramel and tropical fruit. A treat on its own, “The Musician” sings in this simple mint julep recipe.
Mint Julep
1/4 oz. simple syrup
2 oz. bourbon
Fresh mint leaves
Prepare: Muddle mint and simple syrup in a highball glass. Add bourbon, then pack glass tightly with crushed ice. Stir until glass is frosty. Garnish with mint leaves and a squeeze of lemon, then enjoy!
Whether sipped while following along the festivities of the Kentucky Derby or watching the Texas sunset, this mint julep adds a special touch to any occasion. “The Musician” can be purchased online and picked up in the Still Austin tasting room, or find it in Eastside liquor stores like Zeke’s Liquor or The Austin Shaker.
