Welcome to Ghost Pepper Glass
The Face of Ghost Pepper Glass
Katie Plunkard, Lauren Hunt, & Shara Funari
It was fate that brought together the women of Ghost Pepper Glass. After over a decade of traveling the globe, the paths of Katie Plunkard, Shara Funari and Lauren Hunt collided at a time when Austin’s off-hand glassblowing scene had all but disappeared. The previous studios in Austin had closed, leaving glassmakers and students in the area without the resources to continue blowing glass in town. “There was a void and we wanted to fill it with something better than anything Austin had seen before. We wanted to create a community space where we could thrive in making our own work and also enable others to learn about and create glass,” says Plunkard.
So for the last two years, the trio went to work building and refurbishing equipment to transform a rusted, old metal fabrication studio into a vibrant space for professionals, novices and enthusiasts, alike. The studio offers classes, retail and the opportunity to come in to watch whenever they are working. While commissions, weekend workshops and team building groups are keeping things busy at GPG, they only scratch the surface of the skills these women possess. Simply ask a question about the chemistry, history or physics behind what they do and you’ll begin to grasp the treasure that now exists on Austin’s Eastside.
