Creative Action’s Artful Agenda

What began as an anti-bullying school project between four University of Texas Drama and Theatre graduate students has evolved into a city-wide resource benefiting children of all ages called Creative Action. Through enrichment programs, they are positively sweetening students’ lives by employing art as a medium to enrich school performance, boosting self-confidence, and fostering critical thinking.
Established in 1997 as the “Theatre Action Project,” this interactive experience was designed to prevent violence among middle-school-aged students. Over the years, they were granted non-profit status and then expanded to offer after-school and summer programs, eventually rebranding to “Creative Action” to better align with their mission.
Deeply rooted in Austin’s vibrant art scene, Creative Action strives to highlight the benefits of art in a student’s educational and personal journey. As the largest provider of school arts education in Central Texas, they offer a diverse array of programs that cater to students’ preferences and needs. Some of the artistic channels offered are theater arts, filmmaking, digital media, creative writing, and visual arts.
Their after-school programs are available at 30+ elementary and middle schools across the greater Austin area. While high-quality programs typically require a monthly fee, Creative Action’s commitment to accessibility is evident through its generous financial aid and free programs for families who qualify.
Serving as an alternative to traditional childcare, their summer camps offer kids the opportunity to collaborate with industry professionals, nurture curiosity, gain hands-on experience, and make meaningful connections with their peers. The camps typically span over one to two weeks and incorporate relevant themes into the curriculum.
While also recognizing the importance of engaging youth and stimulating their minds, Creative Action’s intensive year-round program allows teens to explore personal identity and social change through their chosen creative outlet. These young artists are compensated for their contribution with a stipend and are recognized for their work while building a portfolio. Through mentorship with working professionals, these young adults are provided valuable feedback to prepare them for the workforce.
Creative Action’s dedication to promoting the benefits of art in education has brought awareness to the difference it can make in a child’s development. Beyond nurturing the next generation of artists, Creative Action actively supports local artists by providing employment opportunities. Anyone can get involved; whether volunteering or donating, Creative Action eagerly welcomes volunteers looking to make a positive difference in shaping the minds of future generations.
