The Faces of a Local Chick Magnets
Welcome to Callahan’s General Store | Charley & Curtis Wilson
Of the many reasons people are attracted to Callahan’s General Store, there’s an undeniable magnet: chicks! Yep, Callahan’s General Store is where chicks – baby chicken breeds of all sorts – can be found to bring excitement, fun, and a sustainable way of life to all ages. And the Callahan family has been offering chicks to generations of Central Texans for more than 45 years.
Each Thursday morning throughout the year, one-day-old baby chicks arrive at Callahan’s General Store and are sorted. They are safely guarded under heat lamps with ample chick starter feed and fresh water on a bed of pine shavings. Depending on the time of year and availability, you’ll find Easter Eggers, Olive Eggers, numerous bantams, Barnevelders, Leghorns, Naked Necks, Jersey Giants, Speckled Sussex, and more. Additionally, you might find newly hatched guineas, quail, ducklings, geese, and
peafowl!
Questions about the breeds and how to care for them can be directed to family member Curtis Wilson (Lucy and Earl Callahan’s great-grandson) and his always-helpful Feed Department colleagues. They can also set you up with the appropriate feed and care kit.
