The Best Travel Destinations in 2022
#13: Oahu, Hawaii
Once escaping the most populated city in the Hawaiian islands, you’ll find the rest of Oahu is known as its own “country.” This country is flanked by two mountain ranges—Waianae to the west and Koolau to the east— dotted with a plethora of inactive volcanos.
Driving this diverse landscape is a feast for the eyes. The dryer side of the island looks as if you’ve landed on another planet with rocky sinkholes of purple and red that may have once been big enough to swallow a small car. Then there’s the contrasting lush green ridges, where deep valleys of greenery appear as if they could also swallow hikers whole. This incredible landscape is offset by craggy majestic mountain peaks with the most Instagrammable views one could hope for. This majesty is accompanied by the bluest Pacific Ocean, epic waves on the North Shore, plunging waterfalls in its jungles, while picturesque beaches and abundant sea life entice snorkelers.
Aside from well-known tourist attractions, there are plenty of lesser-known stops that make Oahu a bucket list destination. First is snorkeling in Hanauma Bay and hiking Coconut Trailhead that surrounds it. Visit Pounders Beach and hike the black cliffs that flank it while massive waves crash against its edge. The North Shore not only boasts some of best surfing, but also the best coconut juice and garlic shrimp on the island. Makapu’u Lookout provides a paved walk to top with stunning views but also hiking the downward, grassy trail leads to colorful sunsets and tide pooling. Moana Falls will make you feel like you just landed on the set of Jurassic Park, and avid hikers will not want to miss Koko Crater Railway Trailhead aka The Stairway to Heaven.
