While you may not need a reason to enjoy a delicious slice of homemade pie, those looking for an excuse should save the date for Saturday, March 14. Pi Day—the annual celebration of the mathematics symbol—is an excellent reason to explore East Austin’s offerings. Celebrating or not, here are five places to savor some of the best pie in town.
Hoover’s Cooking
Pie is often thought of as the epitome of homestyle cooking, so it only makes sense to visit Hoover’s to get a homemade slice. Hoover’s has been serving Southern-style comfort food like chicken fried steak, catfish, and macaroni and cheese, for more than 20 years. Pi Day or not, no meal here is complete without a slice of scratch made pie. Their pie selections include regulars like buttermilk, coconut cream, pecan, chocolate cream, and sweet potato.

Lady Quackenbush’s Cakery
Quack’s 43rd Street Bakery opened their Mueller outpost in 2018 and has been serving cakes, cookies, and more baked goods that are as pretty as they are delicious. Much like the original bakery, patrons can order a whole pie or walk in to enjoy a single slice. For Pi Day, try their crowd favorite, key lime tart, for a fresh and tangy treat.

Cake and Spoon
Made fresh in their East Austin kitchen, the handmade pies from Cake and Spoon are miniature in size but big in flavor. The pastry shop even partnered with Franklin Barbecue to provide the special bourbon banana pie that is a must-have complement to any plate of smoked meat. Pick up a Cake and Spoon pie at the SFC Farmers’ Market at Republic Square and the Texas Farmers’ Market at Lakeline every Saturday where they offer a rotating selection of pies and other baked goods.

Sugar Mama’s Bakeshop
Sugar Mama’s has been serving up sweet treats since 2008, first at their original location on South First and now at a second shop on Manor Road. Their menu consists of a rotating selection of cupcakes, cookies, bars, and mini pies. The featured pie for March is a grapefruit meringue that packs a punch with the fruity flavored topping of grapefruit curd and a candied grapefruit.

Capital City Bakery
Vegans need not miss out on the Pi Day celebrations, thanks to longtime vegan bakery Capital City Bakery. The Eastside establishment offers a full menu of all-vegan sweets and treats that are made fresh daily and include everything from cupcakes to pop-tarts to colorful cakes. Fulfill those sweet-tooth cravings by ordering one of their pies like chocolate cream or apple crumb.
