How to Do Hanukkah in Austin
Everything you need to celebrate the Festival of Lights
Words by Abby L. Johnson
Hanukkah is just around the corner (November 28 – December 6, 2021), and we are ready to celebrate! Whether your family celebrates annually or you are looking to learn a little bit more about the Hanukkah traditions, it’s easy to participate in the festivities right here in Austin.
Where to Get Latkes:
Fried foods are a necessity at any Hanukkah celebration, and the traditional latke (potato pancake) is the most important fried dish of all. This year, order the delicacy from The Austin Synagogue. Feed everyone for just $18/dozen. And don’t forget to pick up some apple sauce or sour cream and chives to top off these crispy treats.

Where to Get Sufganiyot:
Donuts aren’t just for morning commutes. Jelly-filled donuts are a perfect choice for the Hanukkah table. Master Donuts offers them in strawberry, lemon, raspberry, and Bavarian cream. This fried dessert is known as Sufganiyot in Israel and is commonly served during the holiday, making it the perfect excuse to indulge in dessert each night while lighting the Menorah.

Where to Get Supplies:
For everything from Kosher ingredients, to dreidels and gelt, to Menorahs and candles, The Shuk is a go-to spot for all holiday needs. This quaint Kosher grocery store is family-owned and operated. While this North Austin shop might be a bit far away, delivery and curbside service are both available, making holiday shopping a breeze!

Where to Get Brisket:
Most traditional Jewish brisket is slow-cooked in the oven. Here in Austin, however, barbecue reigns supreme. Indulge both customs and bring a brisket from Micklethwait Craft Meats to the family gathering. This smoked entree will pair well with savory latkes.

Where to Learn More:
The Austin Public Library will be hosting a Menorah making class at the Hampton Branch. This event is free and open to the public, though it is recommended for ages three and up. Make plans to participate in this family-friendly craft and learn more about the significance of the Menorah in a fun, creative setting.
