Fun for all is waiting just outside city limits!

When school’s out, it can be hard to find the perfect balance between a relaxing vacation for adults and plenty of fun for the kids. The city of Round Rock is a perfect family getaway, located just 20 miles north of Austin.
Often touted as one of the most livable cities in America, this low-key suburban town offers plenty of unique recreation, history, and culinary delights to lure you away from the big city for a fun-filled spring break.
Stay at the Ruby Hotel & Bar, an independently-owned boutique hotel with a mid-century modern feel and conveniently located near the historic Round Rock square. Or, for a more kid-centric, yet still relaxing, stay, the newly opened Kalahari Resorts boasts the world’s largest indoor waterpark that is sure to be a splash.
When visiting the town square, enjoy the local boutiques housed in historic buildings, some dating back 1876. History buffs should keep an eye out for the multitude of historical markers, and perhaps even take a trip to the final resting site of Sam Bass, infamous outlaw and train robber who is buried at the Round Rock Cemetery. While this may sound a little macabre, the site offers real insight into Texas history. For a deep dive, take the family on a self-guided walking tour around the main square.
After exploring, satisfy your sweet tooth and make sure to munch on a freshly made, melt-in-your-mouth donut from the renowned Round Rock Donuts. 3 Star Candy Shop will further your sugar rush with nostalgic candies and house-made sodas. For a more filling meal, dine at local restaurants like Slapbox Pizzicheria for pints and pies, Urban (and the adjacent Urban Rooftop for appetizers and craft cocktails) for elevated American fare, Lousiana Longhorn Cafe for casual Cajun specialties, or Palermo, an intimate Italian joint featuring an assortment of house-made pastas. These affordable, flavor-packed options offer tasty cuisine with a small town feel. There are also plenty of small pubs to pop into after dinner.
Other kid-friendly activities include the Round Rock Sports Arena, plenty of parks and outdoor sights (the actual Round Rock itself is one not to miss!), and Altitude Trampoline Park. While you’re there, Inner Space Cavern is worth the venture a little further north. This educational excursion takes visitors 60 feet underground into one of Texas’ most well-preserved caves. Take a tour to see stunning rock formations and, most likely, site the bats that reside within.
Who says you have to travel far to have a memorable spring break? With its historic downtown, epic eateries, and kid-friendly parks, Round Rock is sure to leave families wanting more. It’s a good thing this storied city is a quick drive from Austin.
