One of the South’s treasures, Tulsa is a charming and quietly growing city. A boom-town in the 1930s, Tulsa’s nightlife, incredible architecture and great shopping make it a relaxing weekend getaway.
Friday
After getting into town, make a quick pit stop at one of Tulsa’s best diners: Brownies. Ask for a cheeseburger and a slice of coconut cream pie; you won’t regret it. Afterwards, walk off the meal soaking up some culture at the Philbrook Museum. With a remarkable art collection and fabulous gardens, this spot has a little something for everyone. Consider this day a burger tour and stop at the iconic (and instagrammable) Claude’s for cheeseburger #2. Or for a healthier option, The Tropical is sure to please.
Saturday
Kick Saturday off with a hearty breakfast from a Tulsa favorite, Queenie’s, and sample their delicious breakfast plates and pastries. Then stroll through the Utica Square shopping center or visit some of Tulsa’s eclectic vintage shops. In particular, Mod50’s Modern and Cheap Thrills Vintage have unique pieces from every era. Finish off the day with drinks and pub food at James E. McNellie’s, which offers a huge beer selection.
Sunday
For the finale to the weekend, make a point to visit the Gilcrease Museum, which has one of the largest collections of art that depict the American West in the U.S.. Afterwards, head to the Blue Dome District downtown to take in the gorgeous Art Deco architecture and feast on locally sourced treats from the wonderful Dilly Diner. If there’s time, be sure to check out the pretty and spacious Woodward Park for a final moment of relaxation before heading home.
If you go…
Where to stay: For a relaxing stay, check into The Mayo Hotel in downtown Tulsa. With fantastic views of the city, this impressive and historic hotel is nearly a century old and has hosted guests that range from President John F. Kennedy to Lucille Ball and Elvis Presley.
