Culture & Cooking

With wonderful museums, walkable shopping, and delicious food, Santa Fe is the perfect weekend escape for culture hounds and foodies alike.
Friday
After arriving in Santa Fe, dine at Maria’s New Mexican Kitchen for some outrageously good food. Be sure to allow plenty of time to explore the Georgia O’Keefe Museum, where visitors can view the artist’s massive paintings of flowers, photographs and even two short films about her life. Afterwards, head to The Shed to sample their huge tequila menu and eat delicious burritos.
Saturday
Start the day off with brunch at Jambo Cafe, known for the inexpensive and delicious jerk chicken (and the wonderful pie). Afterwards, wander along Canyon Road for a huge array of cute boutiques and art galleries. Stop by Santa Fe Famer’s Market for some mouthwatering fare, and don’t miss out on one of the most famous opera houses in the US, Santa Fe Opera House, which is worth a visit for the architecture alone.
Sunday
If time allows, consider signing up for a class at the Santa Fe School of Cooking, which has classes in traditional New Mexican and Native American cooking (as well as specialty classes on everything from tamales to barbeque). This is definitely a gift that keeps on giving. Hungry for a little more culture? The Museum of International Folk Art has a unique collection of ever-changing exhibitions that are always worth exploring. Afterwards, enjoy one final New Mexican meal at Pantry Restaurant; the carne adovada plate does not disappoint.
If you go…
How to Get There: Clocking in as an 11-hour drive from Austin to Santa Fe, consider making this a road trip to savor the scenery. Or, if time is of the essence, there are frequent flights from Austin to Santa Fe as well.
Where to Stay: If the gorgeous exterior of this hotel isn’t convincing enough, then maybe spa services and gourmet dining options will help. The Hotel Santa Fe is not only a relaxing stay but is also Native-American owned and is situated in the Railyard District.
