A Local’s Guide to Authentic Austin, TX
Live Like an Austinite!
Words by Abby L. Johnson
Whether visiting the city for the first time or having lived here for decades yet to cross some quintessentially Austin activities off the bucket list, this guide is a perfect starting point to begin exploring iconic sites and experiences in the ATX.
Taste Testing
Besides being the Live Music Capital of the World, Austin’s food scene is also a huge draw for many travelers. Tacos of all varieties (breakfast tacos being most coveted), barbecue, and food trucks offering up creative takes on cuisine from around the world are the driving forces of the burgeoning foodie culture in Austin. Though it’s impossible to try every tasty bite the city has to offer, visitors or locals cannot go wrong with classics from Veracruz All Natural, Granny’s Tacos, Micklethwait Craft Meats and their smoked meats taco truck, Taco Bronco.
For afterhours sips and a little taste of nightlife, bar hopping on East Cesar Chavez, Manor Road, or East 6th and East 11th streets offers a slightly tamer alternative to “Dirty 6th” and Rainey Street. Ranch Water, Mezcal-based cocktails, and craft beers sourced from the plethora of local breweries such as Austin Beerworks, Zilker Brewing, and Pinthouse are just a few names to keep in mind for local favorites. Visit the Vegan Nom Food Park, or the trailers at a Kenny Dorham’s Backyard for a snack at Nissi’s and some live Monday night blues, and Community Arbor Food Park for Cuantos Tacos to fuel more taco cravings.
Fun in the Sun
Rent a bike and take it for a spin on the iconic Town Lake Bike Trail. Or, head to EpicSUP and rent a stand-up paddle board to cruise Lady Bird Lake. Visit Mount Bonnel and take the half mile walking trail for a bird’s-eye view of the city. For a more relaxing outdoor activity, grab a hammock (from Austin-based company Kammok) and head to one of the many beautiful greenspaces the city offers. Avoid the crowds at well-known Zilker Park and choose to picnic at Mueller Lake Park, where it’s easy to pick up lunch from the eclectic assortment of restaurants located in this mixed-use neighborhood which hosts a locally-sourced farmers’ market each Sunday afternoon.
Get Artsy
Sample everything the city has to offer by booking a walking tour with Austin Art Walk, where art enthusiasts get the chance to learn the stories behind the many murals. Pop into the intimate Ivester Contemporary or attend an art event at The Cathedral for a taste of Austin’s fine art. And, of course, catching a live musical performance is a must. Though there is really no going wrong with any Austin venue, Antone’s and Hotel Vegas both offer authentically Austin vibes.
