With Austin’s continued growth, it’s increasingly more difficult to come by a local hangout that’s not widely known to the rest of the population. But despite the growing popularity of the city, a handful of places have still remained under the radar by either being tucked away, nestled into neighborhoods, or located just outside the city center.
Secret Beach
Austin may be a landlocked city, but it’s closer to a beach than one would think. Nestled in the Roy G. Guerrero Park, Secret Beach is just a short walk away from the main park area. To get there, start at the Metropolis Youth Center and walk downhill on the nearby trail for about 5-10 minutes until stumbling upon the secluded beach-like area. After the adventurous trek, the sight of water and surrounding sand will be a refreshing treat to those looking for some beach fun close to home. Keep in mind that it’s illegal to swim here, but there’s plenty of room to splash around, play in the sand, and skip rocks in the Colorado River.

The quaint, dimly-lit bar founded by Christina and Edgar Torres features a small indoor area and a patio. However, the drinks that can be found at this intimate space really steal the show.
